Maine!

French Canada!

Driving through Maine
Well, as promised I'm trying to keep up with this blog to let people back home (Minnesota/California/Texas) know what's going on. After a 3 day drive, we made it to our new state. The drive was long, but beautiful, the UP of Michigan was much prettier than I ever imagined, and Quebec was amazing, it was like going to Europe but without the cost! I really look forward to being able to drive back and make a longer visit to Quebec, which is possible considering it's only a day's drive from here.

We had a intense house search, but finally found the most perfect house here. We're in a small town called Glenburn, right on Lake Pushaw. This is a beautiful lake, our house is only a few meters from the water's edge, and we look out onto two large islands.

I was pretty sure I would like Maine, but I had no idea it would be this much. It reminds me some of Minnesota, but instead of farms, there is nothing but forests. The landscape is made up of rolling hills, mountains in the background, and lakes and ponds dotted here and there. The weather is also amazing! It's actually cooler than Minnesota, which I thought was pretty much impossible to do unless living right on the Ocean, or Alaska. It's also wonderful to live somewhere where I feel my values so closely align with most of the people living around me. People are very environmentally aware, our home owners asked that we only use cleaning products that won't impact the lake we live on (of course!). And I've never lived somewhere with so little trash and pollution. People are very self reliant, which I feel is also incredibly important.Everyone I know has vegetable gardens and many raise their own hens for eggs. People's vegetable gardens are proudly displayed in their front yards instead of hidden out back. I drove home from school the other day and saw a woman weeding her huge vegetable garden in cut offs and a bikini top. There is also a very laid back attitude here, I was worried there would be that rude New England attitude, but people are friendlier here than even in Minnesota, which I would not have thought possible. We've pretty much decided that we are never leaving this state, this feels like the home I have always dreamed of. Even if my contract isn't renewed, I'll find something to do and make it work here.

Work has also been amazing, but I'm on my way out there now to pick up some of my insect traps, so I gotta run.
